Wix vs a Professional Website: What's Better for Indian Small Businesses?

Wix advertises heavily in India. The pitch is compelling: drag-and-drop builder, hundreds of templates, "free" to start. For someone who's never built a website, it looks like the obvious choice.
But there's a reason professional web developers rarely recommend Wix for serious business websites. This guide gives you the honest comparison — including when Wix actually makes sense.

What Wix Actually Costs (The Full Picture)
Wix's free plan puts Wix branding on your website and gives you a domain like username.wixsite.com — unusable for a real business. To remove branding and use your own domain, you need a paid plan.
| Wix Plan | Monthly Cost | Annual Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Light (basic) | ₹170/month | ₹2,040/year |
| Core (business features) | ₹340/month | ₹4,080/year |
| Business (ecommerce) | ₹580/month | ₹6,960/year |
Add ₹800–₹1,200 for a custom domain. Over 3 years, a Wix Business plan costs ₹22,000–₹25,000 — similar to a one-time professional website with no recurring subscription.
The Honest Comparison: Wix vs Professional Website
| Factor | Wix | Professional Website |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront Cost | ₹0 (but recurring fees) | ₹12,000–₹40,000 one-time |
| 3-Year Total Cost | ₹18,000–₹25,000 | ₹15,000–₹50,000 |
| Page Speed (Mobile) | Poor (30–50/100) | Excellent (90–100/100) |
| SEO Capability | Limited | Full control |
| Design Uniqueness | Template-based | Custom |
| You Own the Code | No | Yes |
| Portability | Locked to Wix | Move anywhere |
| Custom Features | Plugin-limited | Unlimited |
The critical row: you do not own your Wix website. If Wix shuts down, raises prices, or changes terms — your website goes with it.
Wix and SEO: The Real Limitation
Wix has improved its SEO capabilities significantly since 2020. But it still has fundamental limitations that affect Google ranking:
Page speed: Wix sites consistently score 30–55/100 on Google PageSpeed for mobile. This is a confirmed Google ranking factor. A professionally built site scoring 90+ has a measurable advantage in search results.
URL structure: Wix forces certain URL patterns that aren't ideal for SEO. You can customize some of it but not all.
Technical SEO flexibility: Schema markup, custom meta configurations, and advanced SEO techniques are harder to implement on Wix than on a custom-coded site.
For a business competing in local search (most Indian small businesses), these limitations matter.

When Wix Actually Makes Sense
I'll be honest: Wix is a reasonable choice in these situations:
- You need a basic online presence in less than a day and have zero budget
- You want to experiment before committing to professional development
- Your business has no competition and you just need people to find your contact details
- You enjoy building things yourself and want to manage your site personally
For any business that competes for customers on Google, depends on website leads, or plans to grow — a professional website is the better investment.
The Migration Problem: Wix Lock-In
The most important hidden cost of Wix: you cannot export your website. If you want to switch to a professional website later, your developer starts from scratch. None of your Wix pages, designs, or content can be exported to another platform.
Many of my clients come to me after spending 2–3 years on Wix, paying monthly fees, and realising their website isn't ranking or converting. We start over, losing all that time and recurring cost. Starting with a professional website from day one is almost always the better financial decision.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Wix really free to use for business in India?
The free tier puts Wix branding and a Wix subdomain on your site — not suitable for a real business. You need at least the ₹170/month Light plan for a custom domain, and ₹340+/month for business features. It adds up to ₹18,000–₹25,000 over 3 years.
Can Wix websites rank on Google in India?
Yes, basic rankings are possible on Wix. But Wix sites consistently score poorly on Google's Core Web Vitals (especially mobile speed), which is a confirmed ranking factor. For competitive local searches, a professionally built site has a measurable SEO advantage.
What about Squarespace or Weebly compared to Wix?
Similar trade-offs. Squarespace has better design quality than Wix but similar SEO limitations and lock-in. Weebly (now Square Online) is basic and declining in popularity. None of them give you code ownership or the performance of a custom-built website.
I built a Wix website myself. Can you improve it?
Unfortunately, Wix doesn't allow external developers to edit your site — you'd need to share your account login, which isn't advisable. And Wix's code isn't portable. If your current site isn't working, the best path is usually a professional rebuild.
Is there a middle ground between Wix and full custom development?
Yes — WordPress with a good theme is a middle ground. It's cheaper than custom development, gives you more control and portability than Wix, and has better SEO capability. It's still not as fast or flexible as a custom Next.js build, but it's a reasonable option for budget-constrained businesses.
