Hidden Costs of Building a Website in India That Nobody Talks About

You got a quote for ₹12,000 for your business website. Sounds fair. You pay, the website goes live, and three months later you receive a bill for hosting renewal. Then domain renewal. Then SSL. Then the developer charges extra for every small change.
This is the most common frustration I hear from business owners who've been through the process before. The quoted price and the actual year-one cost are very different numbers. This guide exposes every hidden cost so there are no surprises.

The Real Total Cost of a Website in Year One
Most developers quote only the development fee. But running a website has several recurring and one-time costs beyond development:
| Cost Item | Typical Range | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Development | ₹8,000–₹80,000 | One-time |
| Domain Name | ₹700–₹1,500 | Yearly |
| Web Hosting | ₹2,000–₹12,000 | Yearly |
| SSL Certificate | ₹0–₹5,000 | Yearly |
| Email Hosting | ₹500–₹3,000 | Yearly |
| Maintenance / AMC | ₹3,000–₹15,000 | Yearly |
| Content Updates | ₹500–₹2,000 | Per session |
For a standard business website, the honest year-one total is ₹15,000–₹35,000 when you add everything up.
Hidden Cost 1: Domain Name
A domain name (like yourbusiness.com) is not free and is almost never included in a development quote unless stated explicitly. A .com domain costs ₹700–₹1,200 per year from registrars like GoDaddy, Namecheap, or BigRock. A .in domain is cheaper at ₹400–₹700/year.
Watch out for: Developers who register your domain in their own account. Always ensure the domain is registered in your name or your company's name, with your personal email as the account owner. If the developer holds your domain, they hold your business hostage.
Hidden Cost 2: Web Hosting
Every website needs a server to run on. Hosting costs vary enormously:
- Shared hosting (slow, fine for small sites): ₹1,500–₹4,000/year
- VPS hosting (faster, recommended): ₹4,000–₹15,000/year
- Cloud hosting (Vercel, Netlify for Next.js): ₹0–₹3,000/year for small sites
Many developers include "free hosting for one year" in their packages — but don't tell you what the renewal cost will be. Ask before signing. Also confirm: is the hosting in your name, or theirs?

Hidden Cost 3: SSL Certificate
SSL is what makes your website show "https://" instead of "http://" in the browser bar. Without it, Google Chrome displays a "Not Secure" warning — which kills visitor trust immediately.
A free SSL (Let's Encrypt) is available for every website and takes 10 minutes to set up. Any developer charging you ₹2,000–₹5,000/year for SSL is overcharging you for a free service. Ask your developer directly: "Is SSL included, and is it free Let's Encrypt or a paid certificate?"
Hidden Cost 4: Business Email
A professional business email like you@yourbusiness.com is not the same as a Gmail account. Business email hosting typically costs ₹500–₹3,000/year through Google Workspace or Zoho Mail.
Many clients assume this is included with their website. It rarely is. Zoho Mail offers a free plan for small businesses (up to 5 users) that works well for most small businesses in India.
Hidden Cost 5: Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC)
Websites need regular maintenance: plugin/security updates, backups, uptime monitoring, and small content changes. Some developers charge for this upfront; others only mention it when something breaks.
A fair AMC costs ₹3,000–₹8,000/year and should include: monthly backups, security monitoring, 1–2 content updates per month, and uptime alerts.
My policy: 3 months of free support is included after every website delivery. After that, maintenance is optional at ₹500/month or ₹4,500/year — your choice.
How to Avoid Hidden Cost Surprises
Before signing any development contract, ask these five questions:
1. Does the quote include domain and hosting? For how long?
2. Is SSL included? Is it free Let's Encrypt or a paid certificate?
3. Will I own the domain and hosting accounts in my name?
4. What happens after delivery — is there a maintenance fee?
5. How much will year-two costs be (hosting + domain renewal)?
Any developer who answers these clearly and without hesitation is worth trusting. Vague or evasive answers are a red flag.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest legitimate way to run a website in India?
Domain on Namecheap (~₹800/year) + hosting on Hostinger or Vercel (~₹2,000/year) + free Let's Encrypt SSL + free Zoho Mail. Total running cost: approximately ₹3,000/year. Development is a separate one-time cost.
Can I move my website to a different developer if I'm unhappy?
Yes — if you own the code, domain, and hosting. This is why ownership matters. Always ensure the website files are handed to you on completion and that domain/hosting accounts are in your name.
What happens if I don't renew my domain?
If your domain expires, your website goes offline and anyone can register your domain name. Set domain renewal to auto-renew and keep a reminder. Losing a domain can mean losing years of Google ranking history.
Is a maintenance contract necessary?
Not strictly necessary for a static informational website. But for websites with contact forms, blogs, or ecommerce, regular security updates and backups are important. A single hack or data loss can cost more than years of maintenance fees.
My developer said hosting is free forever. Is that possible?
No. Hosting always has a cost — someone is paying for the server. 'Free forever' usually means the developer is subsidising it with their own account, which means they control your website. This is a dependency you should avoid.
