Why Your Website Isn't Showing on Google in India (And How to Fix It)

"I have a website but nobody finds it on Google." This is the most common problem I hear from Indian business owners who invested in a website and got no return from it. The frustrating truth: most of these websites are one or two technical fixes away from starting to rank.

This guide covers the 8 most common reasons Indian business websites don't appear on Google — and the exact fix for each one.

Reason 1: Your Website Isn't Indexed

Before Google can show your website in results, it needs to know it exists. This is called indexing.

How to check: Open Google and type: site:yourwebsite.com. If no results appear, your website isn't indexed.

How to fix:
1. Create a free Google Search Console account at search.google.com/search-console
2. Add your website as a property
3. Submit your sitemap (typically yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml)
4. Use the "URL Inspection" tool to request indexing of your homepage

New websites typically get indexed within 1–4 weeks after sitemap submission. If it's been more than 4 weeks and you're still not indexed, there may be a technical block (see Reason 8).

Reason 2: You're Targeting the Wrong Keywords

Your website might rank — just not for the words your customers are actually searching.

Common mistake: A salon in Bhopal writes "We offer premium hair styling and beauty treatments" on their homepage. But their customers search "hair salon in Bhopal" or "best salon near Vijay Nagar."

How to fix: Put yourself in your customer's shoes. What would you type into Google if you were looking for your own business? Use those exact phrases in your page title, H1 heading, and first paragraph.

Use Google Search Console's "Search queries" report to see what people are actually searching when they find (or almost find) your website.

Reason 3: Your Website Is Too New

New websites take time to rank — typically 2–6 months for local searches and 6–12 months for competitive national keywords. Google needs time to crawl your content, evaluate your site's authority, and determine where you belong in results.

What to do in the meantime:
- Claim and fully optimize your Google Business Profile
- Get listed on Justdial, Sulekha, and other Indian directories
- Ask satisfied customers for Google reviews
- Post regularly on your Google Business Profile

These actions build your local visibility while your website SEO matures.

Reason 4: Your Website Has No Local SEO

For local businesses, Google needs to know not just what you do but where you do it. Many Indian websites describe their services without once mentioning their city.

Check your homepage: Does your city name appear in the: title tag, H1 heading, first paragraph of content, footer (address), and meta description?

Quick fix: Add "[City Name]" to your page title and main heading. "Professional Web Developer" becomes "Professional Web Developer in Bhopal." This single change can move a local page from page 5 to page 1 for city-level searches.

Reason 5: Your Website Is Too Slow

Google confirmed that page speed is a ranking factor. A website that loads in 6 seconds ranks lower than an equivalent site loading in 1.5 seconds.

Check your speed: Go to pagespeed.web.dev. Enter your URL. A mobile score below 50 is significantly hurting your Google ranking.

Common causes on Indian websites: Cheap shared hosting, unoptimized images (3–8MB photos uploaded directly from phone), too many WordPress plugins, no caching.

Fix priority: Optimize images first (use TinyPNG or Squoosh to compress photos before uploading), then address hosting and plugins.

Reason 6: No Other Websites Link to You

Google treats links from other websites to yours as votes of confidence. A website with zero backlinks from other sites has low authority and ranks below competitors with more links — even if your content is better.

Easy backlinks for Indian businesses:
- Your Google Business Profile (links to your website)
- Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMart listings (free)
- Local newspaper website or regional business directory
- Guest posts on related local blogs
- Partners, suppliers, or associations that can add your link to their website

Even 10–15 quality backlinks from relevant Indian websites can significantly improve your domain authority.

Reason 7: Your Content Is Thin or Copied

Google evaluates content quality. Pages with only 100–200 words of content, or content copied from other websites, rank poorly.

Minimum content guidelines:
- Homepage: 400–800 words
- Service pages: 300–600 words each
- Blog posts: 800–2,000 words

Each page should answer: who is this for, what is it, how does it work, what does it cost, and how to get started. Never copy content from competitors or other websites — Google penalises duplicate content.

Reason 8: Technical Blocks

Sometimes websites have technical settings that accidentally tell Google not to index them. This is surprisingly common, especially on websites recently migrated or redesigned.

Check these:
1. In Google Search Console, look for "Coverage" issues — any pages blocked by robots.txt or marked "noindex"
2. Search your website's code for "noindex" — it should not appear on your main pages
3. Check that your robots.txt file (yourwebsite.com/robots.txt) does not contain "Disallow: /" which blocks all crawling

These are developer-level fixes but are usually solved in under 30 minutes once identified.

Frequently Asked Questions

My website was ranking last month but disappeared. Why?

Common causes: a Google algorithm update (check Google Search Central for recent updates), your website went down temporarily (causing Google to drop it), you or your developer accidentally added a noindex tag, or a competitor improved their SEO significantly.

How do I check what position my website ranks for specific keywords?

Google Search Console's 'Performance' report shows exact search queries and your average position for each. For more detailed tracking, use free tools like Google Search Console's position data or paid tools like Semrush or Ahrefs.

Can I rank on Google page 1 without a blog?

Yes, for low-competition local searches. A well-optimized service page with local keywords, good GBP, and reviews can reach page 1 without blog content. For competitive keywords or broader informational searches, blog content becomes necessary.

Should I hire an SEO agency or can I do this myself?

Most of the fixes in this article can be done yourself without technical knowledge. The basics (GBP optimization, page titles, local keywords, review collection, directory listings) are free and learnable. Hire an SEO specialist for more advanced work — competitive analysis, technical SEO audits, and link building campaigns.

How long after fixing these issues will I see results?

Indexing issues fix quickly (1–2 weeks). Local keyword additions: 2–6 weeks. Speed improvements: 2–4 weeks for Google to re-evaluate. Content additions: 4–8 weeks. Backlink building: 2–3 months for full impact. Most businesses see measurable improvement within 45–60 days of addressing multiple issues together.
